Measure lung health with only a smartphone
What’s wrong with the current approaches?
Portable spirometers encounter several limitations:
- Extra costs and environmental impact due to disposable mouthpieces.
- Accuracy may be affected by calibration and user technique.
- Potential issue from the external device, such as battery, connectivity (ex. Bluetooth).
- Distribution can be limited, especially in remote areas.
Our solution:
the Lung Score
What is it?
The Lung Score measures your clients’ lung health and assesses how well their lungs function. It is based on proprietary dataset and innovative algorithms created by VoiceMed that analyze vocal biomarkers. The output are correlated with the same lung health values as the clinical test: FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio, and more.
The technology behind it
Our health speaks. VoiceMed’s proprietary technology analyzes voice and breath acoustic data with artificial intelligence using just a smartphone. Our health scores are rigorously correlated and validated with gold-standard clinical tests, such as spirometry, becoming vocal biomarkers.
Clinical validation
The score has been created correlating the values of the traditional spirometry with the vocal biomarkers analyzed from the voice and breathe recording.
The first clinical study was done at the Humanitas Research Hospital (the 1st hospital in Italy, 34th worldwide for AI and health, according to the 2021 ranking by Newsweek). More clinical study are currently on going in 2024 and 2025 to increase clinical validation.
The score and reliability
The score can be a number between 0 and 100, where lower values are index of not optimal lung health levels and higher values means optimal, good lung health values. Our first Proof Of Concept was able to measure FVC with 80% of correlation. We are working to provide the other spirometry parameters like FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio, etc.

FAQ
The Lung Score is being clinically validating and one part will become also medical device software according to MDR / FDA regulations.
One part of the product will need MDR / FDA regulations.
No, the Score can be accessed directly from a smartphone through our Software Development Kit (SDK), which can be integrated into your app, or via our standalone app. This eliminates the need for additional wearables and expands your offerings.
The first lung health product targets healthy people for screening, checkups and prediagnosis. Then we will expand to have a product also for people with chronic diseases already diagnosed.
Health insurances companies, digital healthcare provider, telemedicine companies, integrator apps etc.
VoiceMed technology can be used: by integrating the SDK, which is the easiest and fastest for your company, or the API in case you want to combine our score with other scores, or we have the end-to-end application.
